Sedgwick Parish Council wish to appoint a Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer


The applicant will be responsible for managing the Parish Council’s Day to day business and must have IT skills. They will prepare agendas and the minutes of meetings, implement decisions and deal with all correspondence ensuring the Parish Council is compliant with all guidelines. Knowledge of book-keeping is also necessary, previous experience as a Clerk would be beneficial.

The Parish Council meet every other month (January, March, May, July, September, November) on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm and hold the AGM on the third Wednesday in March.


Starting salary is in accordance with the NALC guidelines LC1 point 7, and the clerk will be expected to work five hours a week from home, with the exception of attendance at meetings.


A full training programme will be provided if necessary and the Council will support the successful candidate to obtain Certificate in Local Council Administration qualification should that be required.

​The Role of the Parish Clerk:

Under the section 112 of the Local Government Act (LGA) 1972, a Parish Council appoints an officer to ensure the “proper discharge of their functions”. This “proper officer” is very often referred to as “the clerk (to the council)”. And is responsible for the smooth running of the Council’s business. They are the first point of contact for the Council and all correspondence should be addressed to the Clerk.  Responsibility for implementing the decisions of the Council rests with the Clerk along with giving professional guidance where necessary whilst remaining neutral and discrete. The Clerk is also responsible for financial management. The Clerk prepares, publicises agendas and signs notices and summonses with a list of business to be transacted and is required to attend meetings, take minutes and keep Council and other documents.
